It Took Burger King 40 Years To Realize This…Don’t Wait That Long

The answer to the age-old question...can you really have it all?

A few years ago, I needed a video produced to market the launch of a new software. With high hopes, a tight budget and limited time, I dashed into the videographer's office. Passionately and with a *hint* of desperation, I pleaded my case, complete with an exhaustive list of “must haves.”

When I stopped to take a breath, he casually pushed his chair back and pointed to a small graphic on his wall.

“Pick two, mate,” he said, dryly, in a thick Scottish accent.

“Huh?” I asked, dumbfounded.

“Listen, mate. You can have two. Good, fast or cheap. What’ll it be?”

Holy Mother of Aphrodite! It hit me like a ton of bricks.

Did I want to have it all? Yep. I wanted it fast, economical and phenomenal. Was it possible? Sadly, no.

Just like everything in life, it was a trade-off. You can’t have it all. Nope, even at Burger King. In 2014, they revised their 40-year old slogan “Have It Your Way” to “Be Your Way.”

Perhaps they decided that they delivered on the fast and cheap, but the good was a bit too subjective. Or, maybe they decided good should actually mean good for you, versus bad for you but good tasting. Alas, the only explanation they gave was that their Whopper eating customers should be free to express their individuality. Let ya meat flag fly, ya'll.

King O' Burgers aside, what my colleague needed to know is: what was I willing to live without?

P.S. If you really want it all (who doesn't?) and are feeling uber annoyed that it's just not possible, you could bitch, cry and moan (cause I might for a bit) or crank up Keith...

I saw her today at the reception

A glass of wine in her hand

I knew she was gonna meet her connection

At her feet was a footloose man

No, you can't always get what you want

You can't always get what you want

You can't always get what you want

But if you try sometime

You just might find...

You get what you need
